The
History of VSDC
December
2001
While attending the NSDC Conference in Denver, Barbara Steverson
and Wendy Krickovic, staff development instructors from Henrico
County Public Schools (Richmond, Virginia), attended an affiliate
reception sponsored by members from Ohio. It became clear that
a Virginia affiliate was needed. Armed with desire and ideas,
they set out to make an affiliate a reality. Back in Henrico
County, Barbara and Wendy started discussing how an affiliate
could be formed and requested information from the National Staff
Development Council about the steps involved.

November
2002
A group of six met to start the ball rolling. The six attendees
at the first planning meeting were:

2002
Before attending the national conference in Boston, Mike Murphy,
NSDC, arranged for Wendy and Barbara to attend the affiliates’ meeting
to learn more about starting and sustaining an affiliate. A room
was provided for a Virginia Affiliate interest meeting and more
than 30 Virginia educators attended.

May
2003
Members met at the University of Virginia site in Richmond, Virginia
to continue the affiliation process.
October
2003
Our first state conference was a great success! Thank you to
all of our members for your enthusiastic help. The
conference was held at Zehmer Hall, University of Virginia, with
Dennis Sparks, NSDC Executive Director, as the keynote speaker. The
conference theme was “Revisioning Professional Development.
December
2003
Back in Richmond, a meeting was held to start the ball rolling
toward affiliation.
A mission, goals, committees, etc. were voted upon.
Members of the VSDC Board achieve affiliation status at the national
conference in New Orleans.

Present
VSDC continues to grow as an organization dedicated to promoting
best practices in professional development and high-quality
professional learning opportunities for all educators throughout
the Commonwealth.
